A Debate on the Future of Chicago's Electrical Grid (March 15, 2024)

Start with the end in mind. As the Chicago region decarbonizes we will consume less fossil fuels and demand a lot more electricity. A 2022 ComEd study on the impact of decarbonization concluded that the Illinois electric grid will need to double in size to meet peak demand. This bombshell finding raises many urgent questions: Where is the energy going to come from and how do we pay for it? What about energy conservation? Hydrogen? Nuclear? Storage?

Panelists:

  • Querida Ellis, Principal Program Manager, Smart Grid Programs, ComEd

  • Mark Nelson, Managing Director Radiant Energy Group

  • Ryan Burg, Group Manager, Resilient Systems Design and Engineering, National Renewable Energy Laboratory

  • Ralph Muehleisen, Chief Building Scientist and Buildings & Industrial Technologies Group Leader, Argonne National Laboratory
